Having the right backpack is a crucial part of the equipment you need when you’re going on a trip.
It’s especially important when you need to take a backpack for camping and hiking, and will potentially be carrying it for extended periods.
Ideally, you want something lightweight and easy to carry, with lots of pockets and plenty of room.
Of course, the specifics of this depend on each person and their needs. This is why I’ve put together this guide to the top ten greatest backpacks for camping and hiking in 2022.
The Wrong Backpack: A Cautionary Tale
One of my first experiences of packing for an extended trip was when I started going to festivals at age 16.
I went off to a five day festival in the Welsh countryside, completely unprepared. I had a small backpack crammed with my pyjamas, a change of clothes, and my water bottle.
My heavy, old sleeping bag was in one hand, and my tent in the other.
Safe to say, I had a rather cold, damp weekend. By the time I arrived at my pitch I was absolutely exhausted!
Once was enough for me to learn the importance of a great backpack.
One with plenty of space, pockets, straps, and doesn’t make your backache.
I bought mine for the next summer of festivals and, this time, I turned up with a backpack full of clothes and food, and my tent and sleeping back strapped to the sides.
Plus, I didn’t need a nap before the festival had even begun!
Not only did it save me a lot of pain and grief, but it’s also lasted me a long time.
I’m now 26 and I still use the same backpack whenever I travel, which means it’s lasted me a total of 9 years so far. Best of all, it looks set to last me another 9 years – at least!
Not only is a good backpack a really sensible idea, it’s also an investment that will let you get the most out of your trips for years to come.
I only wish I’d committed to the idea and bought one sooner.
